About Access

Digital accessibility is the practice of removing any barriers that might prevent full engagement with a digital experience. People with disabilities may interact with experiences differently, using assistive technology like a screen reader or alternative input devices. To create and foster an inclusive experience for the disabled community at Rice, the University engages in several initiatives and has teams dedicated to this work.

Digital Information Accessibility Policy 851

Rice Policy 851 establishes a standard and framework for digital information accessibility at Rice University. Rice faculty, staff, and students share values essential to our success as a healthy community. Those values guide our decisions and behaviors and shape Rice’s culture. They come through in how we treat each other and our welcome to our visitors. These values can be recalled simply by our name — RICE — Responsibility, Integrity, Community, and Excellence.

Digital Accessibility is vital to honoring these values and creating an inclusive community. To truly achieve these goals, we must all work to produce digital information that everyone can use and access equally and independently.

General Policy

As part of our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, it is the policy of Rice University that all forms of Digital Information should be provided in a way that is accessible to all members of the Rice community, including those with disabilities.

The purpose of this policy is to provide the required Accessibility Standards for all publicly available web pages created, implemented, or modified after October 31, 2020. Additionally, this policy provides a framework to remediate existing publicly available web pages information in a timely manner.

Other Digital Information (such as internal web pages, Canvas, or applications) should be designed to maximize accessibility, and must meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
